PHILOSOPHY OF MINISTRY
Our philosophy is quite simple actually. We want to see the children and adults at Friendship Baptist Church become like Jesus in every facet of their lives.
THAT MEMBERS OF OUR CHURCH FAMILY WILL:
- Passionately serve Christ
- Have untainted purity by being more concerned about God
- Have a Surrendered Will
- Know the Bible (historically, theologically, critically, and creatively)
- Know who they are and whose they are
- Living for an Audience of One
- Love God; Love their neighbor
- Be filled with victory
- Have a servant's mind
Life 101 (Bible study)
Sunday Morning at 9:30AM
What does LIFE 101 mean? Life is messy. Life can be hard. Life is a constant learning experience. Here at Friendship we never claim to have all life's answers but we know a God that has them all. Our church family is striving to live out life together in every way.
What does living the story mean? God is real and He is telling a real story. The Bible is His inspired message throughout history and applies directly to our lives today. As a church family our goal is to become more like Jesus. To accomplish this we must live out the story that God has planned through daily life application.
HOW ARE CLASSES SET UP?
LIFE 101 classes are designed to encourage a mentorship environment where preschoolers through adults can learn about Biblical truth through life activity. This is NOT your typical classroom. Our classes may be learning about God's creation by walking through the woods while discussing how we fit into the wonderful world He made. Another class may be weaving baskets during their lessons on Moses. Other classes might be building a tower while learning about the Tower of Babel. Classes are not confined to the walls of a room. You never know what you will find when you open the door to learn about Christ in a real way.
Here at Friendship Baptist Church, we have a thriving Bible Study ministry. While Sunday mornings give us a chance to celebrate, worship, and learn as a large church family, Bible Studies give members of our church family the opportunity to ask questions and learn in a more intimate setting.
We have Bible Studies for all ages, young and old:
- Youth (grades 7 - 12)
- AWANA for the kids!
Adult, Youth, and AWANA/Childrens' ministry Bible Studies all meet on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.
The Young Adults (ages 18 - early 30s) often meet in very informal groups on Fridays at various houses throughout the Downriver area.
Friendship Youth Ministry :: Rooted in Christ
The youth ministry at Friendship is a group of people from ages 12 to 20 from Grosse Ile to Melvindale, and from Taylor to Ecorse who don't have all the answers, are kinda broken in some ways, and are totally trusting Jesus Christ with our lives and well-being.
We trust in Philippians 1:6, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
We believe that Jesus is in the process of making us who He designed us to be. While this can prove to be a painful process at times, it is without a doubt one of the most rewarding journies we will ever be on in our lives. So, after saying all this, our desire for the youth ministry at Friendship is to see young people grow into young adults who love Jesus, who are not clones of the world system, and will faithfully serve Him for the rest of their lives regardless of personal sacrifice.
godspeed - Matt Mathis
WHAT CAN I EXPECT WHEN I ARRIVE WITH MY YOUTH CHILD?
When you arrive with your school age youth child you can expect a welcoming family environment for both you and your child. Your school age child is welcome to attend a class or remain with you. We are a family integrated church and encourage families to learn about Christ and live life together.
If your child attends a school age class, they will be asked to fill out a short Information sheet the first time they attend class. This helps our teaching staff get to know your youth child better and their specific needs. During class your youth child will be exposed to hands-on, life activities while learning about Jesus.

Young Adult Ministry
A typical day in the life of a young adult.... up until 1am, alarm goes off at 7am, roll out of bed in just enough time to throw on that pair of jeans that may or may not be clean, jump in the beater of a car, fight the ragging traffic, buzz through the local coffee shop, tweet about the traffic, work an 8 hour shift, wonder if you will ever make enough money to be self sufficient; dig in your change so you have enough money grab a bite to eat through the local drive-thru on your way to classes, sit through a 2 hour class all the time texting your friends to find out where you are meeting after, stress about bills, keep up your relationships, try to learn who you are and who God wants you to be, do homework, check FaceBook, lay in bed thinking about the day, hurry up and say a prayer before you crash and start the whole thing again.
Being a young adult in this world is stressful. Our young adult ministry is designed to meet young adults where they are at.
