Useful links for Parents

HomeWord . com

HomeWord seeks to advance the work of God in the world by educating, equipping, and encouraging parents and churches to build God-honoring families from generation to generation. This site offers everything from monthly parent’s newsletters to Q & A regarding parenting skills. "Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6

Plugged In Online

This resource aids parents in monitoring all the happenings in pop culture. From music to movies this site will equip parents to make informed decisions regarding mainstream media.

Focus on the Family

Focus on the Family's Mission Statement: To cooperate with the Holy Spirit in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with as many people as possible by nurturing and defending the God-ordained institution of the family and promoting biblical truths worldwide.

Shelter Institute

Take the opportunity to learn how to build a home with you and your children. Visit the Maine Shelter Institute for classes on how to build a timber framed home to a standard rocking horse. Imagine what a formational and bonding time families can have together.

Boat Building

More Boat Building

And more

Hopefully someday I will be a father. One of the joys I look forward to is building something that lasts with my son or daughter. Once again, here is another opportunity for your family to grow closer together through working side by side on something of significance. The above links are all great places to start your search.

Inch . org

I know that not all families are involved in homeschooling. The INCH organization hosts seminars and conferences throughout each year. At each conference parents have a myriad of recourses available on everything from education to "Character building for your family". Regardless of your involvement with homeschooling, this is a resource that every family can benefit greatly from.

The Task

Here is an opportunity for your child to be involved with missions on a huge scale. "Task" is a part of the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Association. This organization deals with training and sending out students into the various parts of the world from 1 week to 1 year, depending on age and other requirements. Think about how formational a semester mission trip overseas would be for your teen! I believe their life would be forever impacted after an experience like this.

Answer the Call

"Answer the call" is a part of the North American Mission Board. They offer various opportunities for teens and college age students to do mission work here in the States. The length of time varies so check out the web-site or contact the North American Mission Board for more information.

Cruise America

What in the world is this doing on a resource page for parents? Is that what you are thinking? Well, imagine for a minute you and your entire family experiencing God’s creation out on the open road. I believe family vacations play a vital role in family development. I look forward to the day when I can load up the “tribe” and go to Mt. Rushmore!

The Center for Parent/Youth Understanding

The Center for Parent/Youth Understanding is a nonprofit organization committed to building strong families by serving to bridge the cultural-generational gap between parents and teenagers.

Other options for you and your teenagers:

  • - Become a pen pal with a teenager whose parents are international missionaries.
  • - Encourage your teenage girl to become involved in the life of a godly woman you respect. For example, become involved in a sewing class. Or your teenage son, have him involved in the life of a man who loves Jesus and someone you respect.
  • - Encourage your teenager to really tap into their creative side. Do paintings with each other. Sing, make music, or write poetry together.
  • - When each of your children reaches the age 13, take just them on a special trip. A road trip to the beach, a back packing trip in Vermont, canoeing down the Mississippi river, skiing in northern Michigan...anything.
  • - Read books from respectable authors about parenting and child development.
  • - Attend church together.
  • - Take vacations with other families

These are all options for you and your family. When it comes to your children, THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX!!!!!!! Every aspect of your teens life is being attacked. Morality, virtue, and honor are falling by the wayside when it comes to our children. Take it BACK parents! TAKE IT BACK!!!!! It’s never too late to start.
